Access roads to Teide National Park in Tenerife will remain closed if snowfall continues, according to the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, after heavy snow and ice accumulated across the area. Snowfall in recent hours has been described as “very heavy”, leaving significant snow build-up and icy patches on roads within the protected park.

As a result, the TF-24 and TF-21 roads remain closed to traffic as a precautionary measure following the overnight formation of ice. Authorities say the closures are necessary to ensure the safety of both the public and emergency response teams.

Snowploughs working to clear the roads

Speaking after the Tenerife Island Government Council meeting, Dávila explained that road maintenance teams began work early in the morning using snowploughs to remove ice and accumulated snow.

The clean-up operation follows very low temperatures overnight in the high mountain areas and around Mount Teide, which contributed to the dangerous road conditions.

Strong winds have also been recorded in the area. At the Izaña Observatory, gusts exceeded 100 km/h, adding to the difficult conditions in the national park.

Reopening depends on the weather

Dávila warned that if snowfall continues, access to the national park will likely remain closed until at least Thursday, as large amounts of snow remain in the area.

“There is quite a lot of snow,” she said, stressing that authorities will only reopen the roads once conditions are safe for drivers.

Teide National Park is one of Tenerife’s most visited natural attractions, but winter storms occasionally lead to temporary closures of its high-altitude roads due to snow, ice and strong winds.
