Coach drivers working for the Alsa group, have called an indefinite strike in Fuerteventura starting 2nd March, warning that poor working conditions and unsafe vehicles have pushed staff “to the limit”.
Workers say they are dealing with extremely long shifts, heavy pressure from management, and vehicles that are not fit for the road. The strike committee claims some buses used for school runs, airport transfers, and excursions, have mechanical issues, disabled safety systems, and even expired ITV (MOT-equivalent) certificates.
Drivers report they are expected to take these vehicles out under their own responsibility and fear punishment if they refuse. They argue that this puts both staff and passengers at risk.
How this may affect tourists
The strike affects discretionary transport, which includes private airport transfers, hotel shuttle services, and organised excursions commonly used by holidaymakers visiting Fuerteventura.
If the strike goes ahead:
- Pre-booked transfers may face delays or cancellations.
- Tour operators may need to reduce or reschedule excursions.
- Travellers relying on private hire buses rather than public transport could see limited availability.
Public bus services operated by other companies are not expected to be affected.
Negotiations would need to progress quickly to avoid disruption as the Easter travel period approaches.
