A 28-year-old man has been arrested at Tenerife Norte–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport after Guardia Civil officers uncovered an astonishing 47 stolen mobile phones packed into his checked suitcase. The discovery has fuelled concerns that organised pickpocketing networks are targeting Carnival celebrations, festivals, and busy tourist areas across the island.

Officers from the airport’s Fiscal and Borders Unit detected the stash during a routine X-ray inspection of luggage bound for mainland Spain. The images immediately raised suspicions, prompting agents to intercept the passenger before opening the suitcase in his presence.

Inside, officers found dozens of high-value phones with no proof of ownership, receipts, or explanation for their origin. Several devices were quickly flagged in police databases as stolen, linked to recent reports of theft and opportunistic pickpocketing during Tenerife’s busiest celebrations.

The suspect was detained on charges of receiving stolen goods, and the Guardia Civil is now working with other police forces to identify the legitimate owners.

This is the second major phone-smuggling case detected at the same airport in just a matter of weeks. In January, another man was caught attempting to remove 24 stolen phones from the island, reinforcing fears that criminals are exploiting large crowds and tourist zones to operate theft rings.

The detainee has been placed before the courts along with the seized evidence.
