VIDEO: Intense bus fire in Gran Canaria

A fire on a Global public transport bus yesterday evening (Friday) in Las Palmas in Gran Ganaria, caused huge traffic problems through the city and a column of smoke that could be seen from several miles away.

The incident took place at 8.15pm last night on the GC-23 by the exit of the Doctor Negrín Hospital on the road that connects with the tunnels of La Ballena.

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (Cecoes) received notice of the incident and immediately dispatched firefighters, the local police and a SUC Ambulance to the scene.

Firefighters fought the fire and later confirmed that it started in the back of the bus, which was travelling without any passengers on board and the driver managed to get off it safely, meaning that no-one was hurt in the blaze.

The fire and subsequent extinction work generated large traffic jams on the access roads to the GC-23 and the ring road to the capital of Gran Canaria.
