A mixture of sunshine and cloud is forecast across the Canary Islands today, Tuesday 20th October, with temperatures remaining comfortable and little change in daytime highs.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will have the clearest start, although cloud will develop as the day progresses. In Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the main chance of rain will be inland as cloud thickens around the middle of the day.
Rain pre-alert for El Hierro and La Palma
The Canary Islands Government extended its rain pre-alert to La Palma from midnight today, alongside the existing pre-alert for El Hierro.
The precautionary measure covers both islands because of incoming moist, unstable air. El Hierro could experience locally strong, persistent showers and thunderstorms, particularly from midday, while rain in La Palma is expected to affect mainly southern and eastern slopes.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are not included in this declaration.
Island-by-island forecast for Tuesday 20th October 2026:
TENERIFE
Sunny spells will alternate with cloud, which is expected to become more extensive inland during the middle of the day. Any rain should generally be light and scattered, although an isolated heavier shower cannot be ruled out.
Winds will be mainly light from the east, with stronger gusts possible in higher parts of the north. Temperatures are forecast to range between 20°C and 25°C.
GRAN CANARIA
Variable cloud will give way to cloudier conditions inland around midday, bringing a small chance of occasional showers. High cloud will become more prominent towards the evening.
Northeasterly winds will strengthen later in the day. Temperatures in Las Palmas will range from around 20°C overnight to 25°C during the afternoon.
LANZAROTE
A generally bright start will be followed by some cloud developing inland and across southern areas, with patches of high cloud elsewhere.
The forecast remains largely dry, with light northeasterly winds picking up during the afternoon. Arrecife will see temperatures of approximately 19°C to 25°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Mostly clear skies early on will gradually give way to a mixture of sunshine and cloud. Significant rainfall is not expected in today’s general forecast.
Northeasterly winds will become more noticeable later, with temperatures in Puerto del Rosario ranging between 19°C and 25°C.
Sea conditions and tomorrow’s outlook
A northwesterly swell of around two metres is forecast around the islands, with winds strengthening in some coastal areas later. More sheltered southwestern waters will generally be calmer. Beachgoers should follow local flags and lifeguard instructions.
Wednesday could bring a change for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with cloud increasing and rain becoming more likely during the afternoon. Occasional rain will also remain possible across the mountainous islands.
