Gran Canaria goes up to Level 2 and Tenerife will have Level 3 with extra restrictions

After reviewing the latest epidemiological data for the Canary Islands in today’s Governing Council meeting after more than 500 new cases in the last 24 hours, the Minister of Health for the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, has announced that they have decided that Gran Canaria moves to alert Level 2 restrictions, and Tenerife will have a reinforced Level 3 with extra restrictions.

Trujillo also said that the Canary Islands Government will request a limitation of mobility (curfew) between 00:30 to 06:00 hours from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC).

In addition, the sale of alcohol at a retail level (shops, minimarkets etc) will also be prohibited from 8:00pm, and beaches, parks, squares and other spaces where it is anticipated that there may be crowds of youngsters or celebrations of “botellons" are to be closed at night from 8pm until 6am.

Shows in enclosed spaces are prohibited if distancing cannot be maintained or the use of a mask cannot be controlled, and events with an influx of more than 700 people are prohibited.

Trujillo went on to confirm that the population under 40 years of age is the one that is being most affected by infections and that the Delta strain has penetrated even more in the Islands in just a week. In this sense, he announced that vaccination will be accelerated to try to cope with this situation and that the Canary Islands will receive reinforcement in the supplies of Moderna vaccines on July 26th.

The levels for all the islands are now as follows:
Gran Canaria goes up to Level 2 and Tenerife will have Level 3 with extra restrictions

These changes are due to the rebound in the number of infections that the island is experiencing. Earlier the Ministry of Health notified of 513 new cases of coronavirus, a figure that beats the daily number of infections of the entire pandemic, being 33% more than the previous worst record of 385 cases on 4th September 2020.

Just because the UK has announced a relaxation in travel plans for people returning to the UK, that does not mean the pandemic is over, in fact, quite the opposite as it important now more than ever that we work together to curb the spread of the virus and prevent contagion, by acting responsibly, following regulations, having tests to find the source, and being vaccinated to achieve group immunity so that we are a safe destination and can rebuild. If not, the alternative is unthinkable.
