The latest data from the Ministry of Health, reports of 106 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands today, of which 47 are in Tenerife, 34 are in Gran Canaria, 16 in Fuerteventura, 8 are in Lanzarote, 1 in La Palma, and none in La Gomera or El Hierro. The number of active cases has almost halved in a week as another 1,097 people have been medically discharged in the last 24 hours meaning that there are now only 6,421 active cases in the islands.
The surprise story here is that Gran Canaria now has more active cases than Tenerife, and that La Laguna has dropped so much to 360 actives, which is only 7 more than in Adeje. Of the actives, 261 are currently in hospital wards, 57 are in ICU, and 6,103 are in home isolation, a figure that has also tumbled in the last week.
The best news continues to be the incidence rates for the islands, which again have continued to go down and now stand at 37.32 over 7 days and 88.83 over 14 days, with all the islands except Fuerteventura having an IA7 below 50 and an IA14 below 100.
The evolution of the data in the archipelago does start to beg the question, will the Canary Islands be moved to the UK’s green list for travel at the next review? Reviews of the countries on the green list of UK’s traffic light travel restrictions take place every three weeks, with the last announcement coming on August 26th.
That review came on a Thursday, which had previously been the most common day for the updates, although the previous two announcements had both been made on Wednesdays. If the next review follows the same pattern it means that the next announcement should come at 5.00pm on Thursday 16th September, although it’s very possible that it will come a day earlier.
This means that this time next week the Canary Islands could be on the UK green list with Tenerife and Gran Canaria both in Level 2. If this is the case, it will be the biggest return to ‘normality’ that we have seen since the beginning of the pandemic, and would give tourism a massive boost.
