You can now book an appointment for flu and COVID jabs in the Canaries

The Flu and COVID vaccination campaign was launched in the Canary Islands yesterday by the Ministry of Health, which presented the details of the campaign for the 2023-24 winter season, which includes several changes this year.

Firstly, the Flu jab now includes children aged six months to 5 years old because they are proven to be significant spreaders and transmitters of influenza to adults, as well as healthcare workers, and farm workers to prevent the link between human and animal viruses.

Vaccinating high-risk populations against both influenza and COVID helps prevent the coexistence of the two infections in a single person, thereby reducing health risks while minimizing the strain on the healthcare system, especially when both the COVID-19 pandemic and seasonal influenza coincide.

The flu vaccine is intended for individuals aged 60 and older, pregnant women, individuals of any age with chronic illnesses, healthcare personnel, and caregivers of vulnerable individuals, in addition to those mentioned earlier, and it also encourages smokers to get vaccinated.

There are four types of flu vaccines depending on the age group and risk profile they are intended for. Additionally, one of these vaccines is nasal which is suitable for children.

These vaccinations are in addition to the immunization against respiratory syncytial virus, which causes bronchiolitis in neonates and infants.

From now on, you can request an appointment through 012 for immunization against these respiratory viruses in preparation for the peak seasonal period. To receive these vaccines, appointments must be scheduled through 012 or their toll-free numbers (922 470 012 and 928 301 012).

Appointments can also be made for joint influenza and COVID-19 vaccination for those aged 60 and older.
