About Montaña Roja:
Montaña Roja, or “Red Mountain,” is a volcanic cone rising to around 171 metres on Tenerife’s southern coast in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. The peak and its surrounding 166‑hectare area form a Special Nature Reserve, stretching over 3km of rugged coastline, including dunes, fossilised sand formations, tidal pools and wetlands.
The hill’s iron-rich basalt pyroclasts give it its distinctive rust‑red colouring, making it a prominent landmark visible from El Médano and even Tenerife South Airport.
This is a popular destination for both hikers and beach‑goers. A moderate loop trail of roughly 2.9 miles (4–6 km round‑trip) takes around 1–2 hours to complete, offering panoramic views across beaches such as Montaña Roja itself, La Tejita and El Médano.
