Weather stations report over 30 litres of rainfall in parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Several weather stations across the Canary Islands recorded over 30 litres of rain per square metre yesterday, Saturday, as heavy rains swept through the archipelago. The highest rainfall was recorded at the Valleseco station in the mountainous area of Gran Canaria, which saw 34.2 millimetres of rain between midnight and 5pm.

Following Valleseco, Vega de San Mateo in Gran Canaria recorded 30.6 millimetres by 3pm, according to data released by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Tenerife also saw significant rainfall, with the station at Llano de Los Loros in San Cristóbal de La Laguna recording 30.2 millimetres, and San Juan de la Rambla gathering 22.2 millimetres by 4pm.

Strong Winds Accompany Heavy Rains

In addition to the rainfall, the Canary Islands experienced strong winds, with the highest gust reaching 84km/h at Alto Igualero in Vallehermoso, La Gomera. Other notable gusts included 77km/h in Arure, also in La Gomera, 72km/h in El Paso on La Palma, and a matching 72 km/h at Tenerife South Airport. Maspalomas in Gran Canaria registered wind speeds of 67 km/h.

Aemet had previously issued warnings for potentially intense rains and strong winds across parts of the Canary Islands, advising the public to take precautions. The combination of rainfall and wind could continue to affect transportation and outdoor activities as weather conditions remain unstable.
