The video of a young British holidaymaker taking a bet to jump into a public fountain for 20 euros in the south of Tenerife, has sparked controversy with people questioning what kind of tourism do we want on the island.
The incident took place at the “Fountain of the Americas”, which is located in the Safari Centre opposite Hard Rock Cafe in the Golden Mile in Playa Las Americas, famous for its nightly show of jumping fountains set to music and lights.
The incident was posted on TikTok by the young man’s friends, showing him accepting the dare for 20 euros, and then running shirtless towards the fountain before diving headfirst into the water to the laughter of his companions.

However, their fun was interrupted by a security guard and a member of the public, who quickly pulled him out of the fountain and escorted him away.
The video has angered Canarians who have criticised the holidaymaker’s actions and attitude saying he is disrespectful to our island and portraying an image of tourism that Tenerife doesn’t want.
Some have even commented saying it’s a shame the fountain wasn’t empty when he dived in head first!
