Following the recent passage of Storm Olivier, which brought heavy rainfall and caused severe flooding in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands are now entering a spell of more stable weather. Over the next few days, skies are expected to remain mostly clear, although strong winds from the northeast will be the most notable feature.
However, by the weekend, rain is forecast to return, albeit with less intensity than in previous weeks.
According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Wednesday will see the wind take prominence. Very strong gusts are not ruled out, particularly in the southeast and northwest extremes of the more mountainous islands, as well as at higher altitudes in Gran Canaria and La Gomera.
The forecast also indicates cloudy skies in the north of these islands, with clearer conditions expected elsewhere. Maximum temperatures may drop slightly or remain steady. Moderate northeast winds will prevail, becoming strong in exposed areas and at mountain peaks.
THURSDAY:
On Maundy Thursday, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will experience partly cloudy skies, clearing as the day progresses. Tenerife and Gran Canaria will see cloudy conditions in the north, with a low chance of occasional light showers, but these should give way to bright spells by the afternoon. The rest of the archipelago can expect largely clear skies. Temperatures are likely to remain steady or rise slightly, with moderate to strong northeast winds, especially in exposed locations.
FRIDAY:
By Good Friday, cloud cover will persist in the north of the mountainous islands, with a low probability of light rain. Elsewhere, skies will remain mostly clear. In the eastern islands, conditions will be largely sunny, though some cloud cover is expected overnight in northern areas. Temperatures are set to remain largely unchanged, accompanied by moderate to strong northeast winds.
SATURDAY:
Looking ahead to Saturday, there is still some uncertainty in the forecast, but current models suggest a return of rainfall to the archipelago. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicates that northern winds will continue, increasing cloud cover across the islands, especially in the mountainous regions. Rain is expected primarily on the northern slopes of these islands, though it could also affect Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
SUNDAY:
By Easter Sunday, as the northeast wind persists, rainfall is expected to become more scattered, limited mainly to northern areas of Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria.
Overall, the Easter period in the Canary Islands will be dominated by strong winds, with intermittent cloud and occasional rain later in the week, particularly in the northern areas of the more mountainous islands.
