What began as a simple traffic stop on a TF-1 motorway slip-road in the south of Tenerife, has turned into one of the most surprising drug seizures of the year. Officers from the Guardia Civil in Granadilla de Abona intercepted a van that flagged up for not having valid insurance or ITV (MOT), only to discover 375 kilograms of hashish hidden inside.
The vehicle, stopped as part of a routine road check, was driven by a 35-year-old man accompanied by a 24-year-old woman. Their nervous behaviour immediately raised suspicions, prompting officers to inspect the cargo area.
Inside, they found several cardboard boxes concealing tightly packed bundles of drugs. According to police sources, the magnitude of the haul left officers “in disbelief”, given that the van was not even legally fit to be on the road.
Both occupants were arrested on charges of drug trafficking, and the seized substances have been placed at the disposal of the court.
Severe legal consequences
Hashish contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), classified as a substance that causes serious harm to health under Article 368 of Spain’s Penal Code. Those convicted of drug production, trafficking, or distribution face prison sentences of three to six years and fines up to three times the value of the confiscated drugs, which in this case could amount to hundreds of thousands of euros.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the origin and intended destination of the narcotics.
