Two teenagers injured in a kayaking accident in Costa Adeje

Lifeguards at La Caleta Beach in Costa Adeje, rescued two teenage girls involved in a kayak accident this afternoon (Sunday), who needed assistance due to bad sea conditions in the bay, according to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The 15 and 19-year-olds were close to the jetty by La Caleta Beach when they got into trouble and needed help. Lifeguards on land and on a jetski coordinated their rescue, managing to get the younger of the two girls onto the jetty, and the older one onto rocks at the other side of the bay.

CECOES received an alert just after 1:00pm and dispatched the Adeje fire brigade and a SUC ambulance to the small beach in La Caleta where the injured were located.

On arrival at the beach, the firemen headed straight onto the rocks with a stretcher to retrieve the 19-year-old who had a ‘moderate’ leg injury and couldn’t walk, to take her to safety.

When paramedics arrived they treated the 15-year-old for minor injuries while the 19-year-old was being carried on a stretcher, the latter being transferred by ambulance to the Hospital del Sur for further treatment.

CECOES reminds people that the islands have been under a weather warning for adverse sea conditions and that it is more dangerous than you may think due to strong swells and currents.
