The Canary Islands Government has launched a major new push to boost electric mobility across the archipelago with the 2025 edition of the MOVES III Plan, offering subsidies of up to €7,000 for the purchase of electric vehicles and financial support for installing charging infrastructure.
Funded through both national and European sources, the programme aims to make the transition to electric transport more accessible for individuals, companies, and public bodies, while tackling emissions and improving energy sustainability in the region.
Grants, Tax Relief, and Charging Support
Under the MOVES III Plan, residents and businesses can receive financial aid when purchasing a wide range of electric vehicles, including private cars, motorcycles, vans, and fuel cell models. Buyers can secure the maximum €7,000 subsidy by scrapping an old vehicle alongside their purchase.
In addition to supporting the purchase of EVs, the plan covers the installation of charging stations in private homes, residential buildings, businesses, and public institutions. The level of financial aid varies depending on the applicant, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), housing communities, and public administrations receiving enhanced support.
To complement these measures, the Spanish Government will maintain a 15% personal income tax deduction for those investing in electric vehicles and chargers in 2025, providing an extra incentive to embrace zero-emission mobility.
How to Apply
Applications for the MOVES III Plan must be submitted via the Canary Islands Government’s Electronic Office. Eligible purchases and installations must have taken place between 1st January and 31st December 2025. However, applicants will have until 31st December 2026 to justify their investment and complete the necessary processes.
This extended timeline is designed to give residents, businesses, and institutions the flexibility to implement their electrification plans without administrative pressure.
An Urgent Transition
Speaking about the programme, the Canary Islands’ Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy, Mariano Hernández Zapata, emphasised the importance of accelerating the shift to electric transport.
"Electric mobility is no longer a vision for the future, it is a necessity, especially in island territories like ours, where improving energy efficiency and reducing dependence on fossil fuels are vital priorities," he said.
The government also acknowledges that the shortage of public charging infrastructure remains a barrier to widespread adoption, making this year’s MOVES III funding round a critical step toward resolving those limitations.
Who Can Benefit?
The MOVES III Plan is open to a wide array of applicants, including:
- Private individuals
- Self-employed professionals
- SMEs and large companies
- Public administrations
- Residential property associations (communities)
By targeting all sectors of society, the scheme aims to democratise access to clean mobility and stimulate job creation and investment across the green economy.
With substantial funding, generous tax incentives, and an inclusive application process, the 2025 MOVES III Plan marks one of the Canary Islands’ most ambitious steps yet toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport system.
