The Government of the Canary Islands has unveiled an updated proposal for the construction of a key section of the southern motorway on Fuerteventura, which includes a 500-metre tunnel between the ravines of Tarajal de Sancho and Guerepe.

The announcement was made during a meeting held on Tuesday between the regional Minister for Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, and representatives from the Fuerteventura Cabildo, alongside local residents.

The project, which covers the Cuchillete–Matas Blancas route, forms a vital part of the island’s North-South Corridor. The updated design follows months of technical discussions, consultations with local authorities, and meetings with the public. A previous version of the plan was paused to allow for a more collaborative and transparent process.

The revised route will span 21 kilometres and feature a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction and hard shoulders. In addition to the tunnel, the design includes five new junctions to connect major population centres, including Gran Tarajal, Mazacote, Giniginamar, Tarajalejo and La Lajita.

The updated proposal will now be submitted for public consultation, giving residents, organisations, and local authorities the opportunity to raise concerns, suggest improvements, or seek clarification.

Minister Rodríguez has said that completing the North-South Corridor is a strategic priority for the Canary Islands, describing it as “essential for improving mobility and territorial cohesion, while addressing a long-standing need for the people of Fuerteventura.” He added that public input remains central to the project: “This is our second meeting with local residents, and we’re committed to ensuring that the final design reflects both the infrastructure needs and the concerns of the community.”

Lola García, President of the Cabildo, also praised the collaborative process: “We met with residents in February to listen to their suggestions, and today we’re presenting a revised, consensus-based proposal, as promised. This project must be included in the next bilateral agreement between the Canary Islands and the national government, as it’s vital for Fuerteventura’s development.”

Local mayors Candelaria Umpiérrez (Tuineje) and Alejandro Jorge (Pájara) also welcomed the renewed dialogue and technical presence on the island, stating that the revised design shows the administration has taken public feedback seriously.
