Two hikers who lost their way while trekking the Vigaroe circular route in the municipality of La Aldea, Gran Canaria, were rescued yesterday morning (Sunday) after spending an entire night stranded in a remote area of the island.
The pair became disoriented on Saturday after deviating from the marked trail and were unable to find their way back, prompting a search and rescue operation.
Efforts to locate them began during the night, with teams from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium and officers from the Guardia Civil attempting to reach the missing hikers on foot via several routes.
However, the rugged terrain hindered their progress, and the hikers remained out of reach until the following morning.
Due to the inaccessibility of the area, a helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was eventually deployed. The aircraft successfully located the pair and airlifted them to the helipad at the Dr Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas.
Following their rescue, the hikers were assessed by medics and found to be showing symptoms of hypothermia. They were subsequently taken by ambulance to the Insular Hospital for further treatment.
