Two 3.4 and 3.5 magnitude earthquakes recorded in the Canary Islands

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded yesterday afternoon (Saturday) in La Aldea de San Nicolás, Gran Canaria, as reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

Occurring at 4:55pm, the earthquake was detected at a depth of 19 kilometres. As of now, the IGN website does not show any reports of the quake being felt by the local population.

This tremor follows another smaller earthquake earlier in the day: a 2.9 magnitude tremor recorded at 1:15pm to the south of La Gomera at a depth of 13 kilometres.

In the last few days, the Canary Islands have experienced multiple seismic events. On Friday, the IGN recorded seven additional tremors, including a 3.5 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 22 kilometres in El Pinar, El Hierro, at 6:38am.

Another quake, with a magnitude of 2.2, was detected at 3:15am in the Enmedio Volcano between Tenerife and Gran Canaria at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The increase in seismic activity is being closely monitored by IGN, though there have been no reports of damage or significant impact to the public.
