A 70-year-old man has died and another, aged 65, was moderately injured after both were rescued from the sea showing signs of drowning at San Cristóbal beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The incident took place at around 12:40pm on Friday, according to a report from the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The emergency services were alerted to the situation when several individuals were pulled from the water and required immediate assistance. Before emergency teams arrived, a coordinating nurse from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), who had answered one of the calls, determined through questioning that one of the men was in cardiac arrest.
She then provided instructions via telephone to help bystanders begin resuscitation attempts.
Five ambulances and a Rapid Intervention Vehicle (VIR) were quickly dispatched to the beach. Upon arrival, medical personnel continued advanced CPR efforts, but sadly, they were unable to revive the 70-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man, aged 65, was treated for moderate symptoms consistent with near-drowning before being transported to the Insular University Hospital for further care.
Local and National Police officers were also present to secure the area and assist emergency teams.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of the sea, even in designated swimming zones. Authorities urge all beachgoers, residents and tourists alike, to be vigilant and follow all safety guidelines while enjoying the water.
