The Municipality of Mogán in Gran Canaria has announced that it has collected more than €662,000 in the first seven months of applying its tourist tax, despite the ongoing legal dispute between the local council and hotel operators over its implementation.
Between 11th March and 30th September 2025, the municipality recorded 1,491 self-assessments, resulting in a total revenue of €662,425 from the daily charge of €0.15 per visitor.
During the initial period (11th–31st March), they collected €35,043, while between April and September, revenue reached €627,382.
The Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, said the town expects the amount to double over a full year, emphasising that all proceeds will be reinvested in improving tourist services and infrastructure.
According to Eduardo Álamo, director general of Gestiona Mogán, compliance has been highest among the hotel sector (75%), followed by apartment complexes (51.7%) and holiday rentals (31%).
The council also stressed that the introduction of the tax has not had any negative impact on tourism activity. In fact, occupancy rates and revenue have increased compared to the previous year.

“Tourists are happy to pay because they want to contribute to the local environment,” said Bueno, describing the measure as “a fair and beneficial tool for the destination.”
The mayor called on the Canary Islands Government to “take note and allow this model to be replicated” in other tourist municipalities across the archipelago, highlighting that Canary Islands tourism generates 18 million visitors and €22 billion annually.
Álamo added that the so-called ‘Mogán model’ has already attracted interest from other destinations, including La Laguna (Tenerife), La Oliva (Fuerteventura), and Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura).
