The latest samples taken this morning, have led the Canary Islands Government to inform that the air quality in a large part of Tenerife is classed as ‘extremely unfavourable’ today due to the presence of suspended dust that has affected the Archipelago since Saturday. The worst readings were of both PM2.5 and PM10 particles in areas of the north, south, and the Santa Cruz areas of the Island.
According to the official document from the Government, during this categorization of the air quality, there are ‘emergency recommendations for public health’ since the entire population can be seriously affected.
Due to this, risk groups and vulnerable people, particularly those with respiratory-based illnesses or health problems, are recommended to avoid prolonged stay outdoors, to follow their medical treatment plan meticulously, or go to an emergency department their health worsens.
For the general population, it is advisable to reduce all outdoor activities and carry them out indoors, as long as COVID restrictions allow. If this is not possible, adequate protection should be used for work that has to be carried out outdoors, including wearing a mask due to the sand in the air.
The yellow weather warning for haze is currently in force in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura until midnight tonight at the earliest.
