The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported nine seismic events in El Hierro, one of the islands to the west of Tenerife, since Friday afternoon, with the strongest earthquake registering a magnitude of 3.0 on the Richter scale.
The most intense tremor occurred 30 kilometres west of the municipality of Frontera at a depth of 30 kilometres, according to Ithaiza Domínguez, Director of IGN in the Canary Islands.
Timeline of Seismic Activity:
Ithaiza Domínguez stated that while the region has experienced seismic activity over the past decade, since the 2014 eruption in El Hierro, the current series of earthquakes is not unprecedented. Typically, the area records around 50 earthquakes a year, ranging from 10-15 to 30 kilometres in depth to the west of the island.
He explained that a concerning scenario would involve dozens or even hundreds of earthquakes per hour, which could signal a magmatic intrusion. However, the recent series does not indicate any immediate threat, and no other anomalies have been detected.
