The Cable Car and Tenerife Arena projects in Santa Cruz are given the green light

The Santa Cruz council have started to move forward with two major infrastructure projects: the cable car linking Las Ramblas with Parque de Las Mesas and the new Tenerife Arena, a covered venue with a capacity for over 12,000 spectators.

The arena is planned for Los Alisios in the Southwest district, close to the North-South connection for the TF-2 motorway.

These initiatives are part of a broader urban development strategy led by the city council, which also includes new coastal access points in Añaza, an underground car park near Almeyda, and the creation of a large public square between the twin towers in Cabo Llanos.

The Councillor for Public Services and Strategic Planning, Carlos Tarife, has confirmed that preparations for these projects are progressing. He said that the council aims to commission land studies before the end of the year, with Gestur responsible for the Tenerife Arena study and Teleférico del Teide expected to oversee the cable car analysis.

Announcing these plans during the presentation of his department’s budget, Tarife revealed that an initial €60,000 has been allocated to kickstart the work. He emphasised that these developments will significantly enhance the city’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Once urban planning is initiated, the council will seek financial backing for the projects. Tarife confirmed that negotiations would first take place with the Cabildo, and efforts would also be made to secure European funding. The cable car project alone is estimated to require an investment of around €15 million.

Further details include the commencement of plans for the Tenerife Arena this year, alongside the Añaza maritime platform, which will improve access to the sea. Tarife indicated that the cost of this platform is expected to reach €12 million, and the goal is to begin the tendering process by November, with support from both the Canarian and national governments.

Additionally, by the end of the year, the underground car park project near the Almeyda barracks, estimated at €20 million, is set to be finalised. In May, the city plans to complete the design for a tree-lined square between the twin towers, which will be tendered at a cost of €2.5 million.
