One of Tenerife’s most recognisable, and quirky, landmarks has suffered an unfortunate mishap. The famous Snowman sculpture on the motorway bridge in Santa Cruz has lost its “carrot” nose after decades of standing tall as a local curiosity.
No, it wasn’t stolen, it simply fell off in the early hours of Saturday, 11th October,. The structure, created in the late 1980s by Czech-German artist Jirí Georg Dokoupil, has endured years of sun, wind and rain. According to the council, the attachment holding the nose finally gave way due to weather damage and age.
Fortunately, the council acted quickly: officials located the missing piece and confirmed that repairs are already planned. “It will be back in place very soon,” local sources said, though many residents have joked that a quick clean-up wouldn’t hurt either.
From “ugliest roundabout” to local treasure
Once ridiculed as one of Spain’s ugliest roundabouts, the Snowman has since become a beloved local icon.
In 2023, the snowman’s fame grew when it was featured on El Hormiguero, one of Spain’s most popular TV shows. Comedian Luis Piedrahíta humorously described it as “a giant monster leading man toward death”, while others joked that at night “it must look like a demon” and that “its nose is bigger than its head.”
Despite the teasing, locals have developed a real affection for the oddball sculpture, proof that even the most unusual public art can find a place in people’s hearts.
