The Tenerife Cabildo has activated the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) as of 8:00am today (Wednesday, 6th August), following a wildfire alert issued by the Canary Islands Government. As a result, all outdoor fires and barbeques are now strictly prohibited in recreational areas across the island.

This decisive action comes after the Directorate General of Emergencies of the Canary Islands declared a wildfire risk alert, in accordance with the region’s Special Civil Protection and Emergency Response Plan for Forest Fires (INFOCA), as temperatures continue to climb.

Strict Fire Ban Across Recreational Areas

As part of the level 1 wildfire prevention measures now in place, the use of fire in all forms is banned in outdoor and recreational spaces. This includes barbecues, bonfires, fire pits, gas stoves, and any type of flame-based cooking equipment. Additionally, machinery or tools that could generate sparks, such as strimmers, welding equipment, and cutting tools, are not permitted in areas at risk.

The use of fireworks or any type of pyrotechnics is also strictly forbidden in these areas.

Smoking Ban and Outdoor Activity Review

Smoking is now banned in forested areas, campsites, recreational areas, trails, viewpoints, and other public-use mountain infrastructure. The Cabildo has also recommended that all departments review and, where necessary, suspend or postpone planned outdoor events, particularly those scheduled to take place in or near forested or high-risk areas.

Municipalities and Public Urged to Act Responsibly

Municipal councils are being encouraged to consider adopting additional preventative measures based on local risk levels.

Residents and visitors are being strongly advised not to enter forested zones and to exercise extreme caution across the island. Activities that could unintentionally spark fires should be avoided, and individuals are urged to take all necessary self-protection steps during the ongoing heatwave.

Heatwave Intensifies Across the Canary Islands

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued updates forecasting further increases in temperatures across the Canary Islands, with the extreme heat episode now affecting four islands and expected to intensify over the weekend.

Emergency services remain on high alert, and aerial firefighting resources are ready to be deployed should any wildfire outbreaks occur.

For safety updates and further guidance, follow official channels and the Cabildo de Tenerife’s emergency announcements. Residents and tourists are reminded: your cooperation is essential in preventing forest fires during this high-risk period.
