The Tenerife Cabildo has announced plans to tender the construction of a new roundabout at one of the island’s most congested traffic points, the junction of the TF-65 with the Las Chafiras Industrial Estate, in the south of Tenerife, with works expected to take place between 2026 and 2027.

The project, located near the car park of the popular guachinche restaurant La Maestra and directly opposite the Alegría commercial centre and the petrol station by Mercadona, will also include a direct lane towards the TF-1 motorway heading to the South Airport.

Aiming to ease chronic congestion
Las Chafiras has long been one of the busiest traffic hotspots in Tenerife, and indeed in the Canary Islands, with up to 100,000 vehicles passing through daily. The area has suffered years of severe congestion, causing delays, safety concerns, and frustration for both residents and visitors.

The €2.17 million project, with an estimated eight-month construction period, is seen as the final piece in the puzzle to improve traffic flow, restore road capacity, and enhance safety, according to the Cabildo’s Department of Roads.

Linked to other key road works
The new roundabout is separate to, and will complement, the ongoing Las Chafiras–Oroteanda junction works and the expansion of the TF-1 to three lanes.

The design is being adjusted to fit the updated road layout following these improvements, including new slip roads and the recently completed access roundabout to Las Chafiras.

Previous emergency measures
During earlier phases of roadworks in the area, the Cabildo was forced to implement emergency solutions to prevent gridlock. One such measure was the construction of the temporary “Castillo roundabout” to provide an alternative access route to Golf Del Sur and Los Abrigos, which helped organise traffic flows to and from the TF-1 and the Las Chafiras industrial estate.

Land acquisition underway
The Cabildo has already declared the urgent occupation of 3,000 m² of land required for the project, with affected properties and rights now undergoing public consultation.

If all goes to plan, the new roundabout could become a key piece in finally unblocking one of Tenerife’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks, improving journeys for thousands of drivers every day heading to and from the airport and southern resorts.
