Teide hiking trails reopened after ice and snow clearance completed

The Tenerife Cabildo has officially reopened all hiking trails within the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano area after completing ice and snow clearance work. However, authorities are urging hikers to exercise caution while using the trails.

In a statement, they emphasised the importance of taking necessary precautions and reminded visitors that they must obtain the appropriate permits via the Tenerife ON website and app (www.tenerifeon.es).

To access specific trails: Trail No. 7 (from the summit of Montaña Blanca to its junction with Trail No. 11, Mirador de La Fortaleza), Trail No. 9 (from its junction with Trail No. 32, Abeque, to its endpoint at Trail No. 12, Mirador de Pico Viejo), Trail No. 23 (Los Regatones Negros), and Trail No. 28 (Chafarí), visitors must reserve in advance through the official platform.

Additionally, access to Trail No. 10, Telesforo Bravo, which connects La Rambleta to the summit of Mount Teide, requires a permit that must be obtained through the National Parks reservation system (www.reservasparquesnacionales.es).

Strict Requirements for High-Difficulty Trails

The Cabildo has reiterated that these trails are highly challenging and unsuitable for people lacking experience in high-altitude hiking or those with heart, respiratory, or mobility conditions.

Hikers must wear or carry long trousers, a fleece jacket, and mountain-specific footwear. They are also required to bring water or hydrating fluids, a mobile phone, and a torch or head lamp with spare batteries, particularly for those hiking in the late afternoon, at night, or early in the morning.

During winter, gloves and a hat are mandatory due to extreme temperatures.

With the reopening of these trails, authorities hope to ensure a safe hiking experience while preserving the natural environment of Tenerife’s iconic volcanic landscape.
