Surge in Illegal excursion operators in Lanzarote who target unsuspecting tourists

The Professional Association of Tourist Guides (APIT) in Lanzarote has raised concerns about the growing presence of illegal tours on the island. Unlicensed operators are reportedly picking up tourists from cruise ships in the port of Arrecife and offering guided itineraries without proper training or licences.

According to APIT, these unregulated activities tarnish Lanzarote’s reputation as a premium tourist destination.

In a statement shared on social media, the association criticised the use of unsuitable vehicles, referring to them as “sardine cans,” and warned that these operations violate transportation regulations.

The Growing Problem of "Pirate" Tours

APIT President, Natacha López-Braña, explained that certified guides are strictly prohibited from transporting clients themselves, requiring the use of licensed coaches or minibuses with professional drivers.

In contrast, these illegal operators advertise their services on platforms like Facebook and falsely present themselves as qualified guides.

"This paints an unacceptable picture for a destination like ours, where untrained individuals feed tourists falsehoods about our island," López-Braña said.

Island-Wide and Regional Issues

Sources in Lanzarote’s tourism sector have said that the problem is not confined to the island. Similar illegal operations are widespread throughout the Canary Islands, particularly during the high cruise season when ports see a significant influx of visitors.

Beyond excursions, these clandestine operators also offer unregulated airport transfers, further intensifying concerns.

Safety and Economic Impact

The implications of these "pirate" tours extend beyond mere annoyance for certified operators. APIT and local tourism professionals emphasised that these unlicensed vehicles often lack insurance, leaving passengers unprotected in the event of an accident.

“This is not just a problem of image or unfair competition,” an APIT representative stated, “but a serious safety risk for visitors.”

The association is calling on local authorities to take stronger measures to combat these illegal operations. Enhanced inspections, stricter enforcement, and awareness campaigns for tourists are among the suggested strategies to preserve Lanzarote’s reputation and ensure the safety of its visitors.
