Adeje is about to get a stunning new forest right at its doorstep. The local council has unveiled an ambitious project to transform over 35,000 square metres of land in El Galeón, by the TF-1 motorway, into a vibrant green oasis. And the best part? Work is expected to start this September.

Driven by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, this initiative is part of Adeje’s promise to lead the way on climate action, ever since signing the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and approving its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) back in 2020.

An exciting investment in Adeje’s future

This first phase of the project will see an impressive €800,000 invested in creating what’s known as a thermophilous forest — a special type of woodland that blends beautifully between coastal scrub and Tenerife’s majestic mountain forests like the laurisilva and pine.

More than 29 species of native and well-adapted international plants will call this new forest home, bringing colour, shade and biodiversity. In fact, once fully established, this green giant is expected to absorb around 20 tonnes of CO₂, helping to clean the air and tackle climate change head-on.

“Our commitment to reducing Adeje’s carbon footprint is total. We’ve been working tirelessly for years, and this spectacular green entrance is just another big step forward,” said an enthusiastic Mayor Rodríguez Fraga. “We want a sustainable municipality that truly respects its stunning surroundings.”

More shade, more beauty, more life

But it’s not just about fighting climate change. This lush new forest will also rescue a tired, neglected patch of land, turning it into a cool, shady paradise for residents and visitors alike. Whether you’re driving in from the motorway or strolling into town, the views will be dramatically greener and more inviting.

And there’s more to come: this is only the beginning. Future phases aim to double the size of the forest to a whopping 70,000 square metres, with walking paths and areas designed for people to explore and enjoy.

Powered by renewables and local ingenuity

In true Adeje style, the project will harness renewable energy, reclaimed water from the local treatment plant, and compost made from hotel food waste through the council’s innovative Circular Tourism Communities scheme. It’s a brilliant example of how the town is cleverly using its own resources to build a brighter, greener future.

“This isn’t a one-off,” the Mayor promised. “We have plans to roll out even more amazing green spaces like this across Adeje.”

With the tender process already underway, construction is set to kick off before the end of September and could be completed in under ten months — maybe even sooner if all goes well.

So, whether you’re a long-time resident or a visitor discovering Adeje for the first time, get ready: a spectacular new forest is about to transform the town’s entrance into a living, breathing celebration of nature.
