The Spanish Government has approved €81 million in funding for the Canary Islands to finance continued free public transport in 2025. The initiative, described as “exceptional” by the Ministry of Transport, acknowledges the unique challenges of the islands and aims to promote public transport use, reduce urban congestion, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
A similar measure has been approved for the Balearic Islands, which will receive €43 million for the same purpose. The initiative highlights the government's recognition of the geographical and logistical particularities of island territories.
Encouraging Sustainable Mobility
Alongside this direct funding, the Spanish government has also subsidised a 30% discount on public transport travel cards and multi-journey cards in regions that had implemented at least a 50% discount in 2024.
In the Canary and Balearic Islands, the state funding goes a step further, ensuring total coverage for commuters, enabling completely free access to public transport for regular users.
Implementation and Impact
The allocated funds must be used by regional governments to compensate transport operators for the revenue lost due to offering free travel. This applies to operators managing land-based collective transport services, such as buses and trams.
The measure is expected to improve accessibility, ease financial burdens on residents, and increease environmental benefits by reducing reliance on private vehicles. It represents a significant step in integrating sustainable practices into daily mobility in the Canary Islands and beyond.
