The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) has officially presented its newest and most advanced research vessel, the Odón de Buen, at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The ceremony brought together local and regional authorities, representatives from Canary Islands universities, and research centres.

The Odón de Buen is the new flagship of Spain’s scientific fleet. At 84 metres long, with space for 58 crew and researchers, it can spend up to 50 days at sea.

Equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, autonomous underwater vehicles, and high-resolution sonar, the vessel will support studies on deep-sea ecosystems, climate change, marine biodiversity, fisheries, and even underwater volcanology.

According to IEO-CSIC director Rosa Figueroa, the ship will have a strong and ongoing presence in Canary Islands waters. Built by Astilleros Armón in Vigo with contributions from over 25 Spanish companies, the €85 million vessel is powered by an eco-friendly hybrid diesel-gas propulsion system designed to reduce emissions.

The ship is currently undergoing sea trials and technical adjustments in Canary waters before launching its first research campaign in August.

The Odón de Buen joins the IEO’s fleet of five major research ships, which also includes the Ramón Margalef and Ángeles Alvariño. These vessels play a vital role in Spain’s marine science efforts, alongside nine coastal research centres, five aquaculture facilities, and a satellite imaging station.
