Strong winds, dense calima, and rough sea conditions are causing havoc in Lanzarote, prompting the early closure of several schools just days before the Christmas holidays.
In response to safety concerns, multiple municipalities have requested the suspension of classes to prevent potential incidents.
The Ayuntamiento of Yaiza has ordered closures for schools in Las Breñas, Yaiza, CEIP Mararía in Femés, and the unitaria school in Uga. Meanwhile, Teguise has requested the closure of schools in Caleta de Famara, Soo, and the CEO Ignacio Aldecoa in La Graciosa.
Authorities in Teguise also advised against school buses collecting students residing in Caleta de Famara due to the dangerous weather conditions.
In Tinajo, where strong winds caused noticeable disruption on Monday, the council has suspended classes at CEIP El Cuchillo. Similarly, Haría’s municipal government has opted for a full suspension of educational activities across all its schools.
Other municipalities, including Tías, San Bartolomé, and Arrecife, have not yet implemented class suspensions, as the winds and calima are not expected to impact these areas as severely.
Students in affected regions have effectively begun their holidays early, while authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and prioritise public safety.
