Visitors to the natural pools in Punta del Hidalgo, Tenerife, were met with disappointment today (Friday) after the popular swimming area was closed by the local authorities due to the discovery of faeces in the water.
In a press release, the Department of Beaches and Pools for the La Laguna Council, explained that because the pool is natural, chemical products cannot be used to treat the water.
As a result, the pool must be sectioned off, drained, cleaned, and then refilled when the tide rises, a process that can take almost a whole day.
The council expressed regret for the inconvenience caused but emphasised that the measure is "necessary to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the swimming area".
One local resident told how lifeguards suddenly began evacuating swimmers from the pool and later informed them of the situation.
