Elderly man in wheelchair knocked over on pedestrian crossing in Lanzarote

An elderly man in a wheelchair has been knocked over by a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing near El Reducto in Arrecife, Lanzarote.

The incident took place this morning (Friday) when, according to eyewitnesses, a white car collided with the man’s wheelchair.

The man, a resident of San Bartolomé who is paralysed, was thrown to the ground out of his wheelchair, which ended up overturned beside him. Several passers-by rushed to help him before the emergency services arrived.

The driver of the car remained at the scene of the incident and fully cooperated with police, explaining that it was an accident and only a "light tap" at low speed, but that the wheelchair had simply tipped over. He appeared calm and gave a full statement to officers.

The disabled man was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure for routine observation, as he didn’t appear to have suffered any serious injuries, nor was there any visible bleeding. He told medics that he had not hit his head and reported only a bruise to his left side.
