A 79-year-old man is in critical condition after being rescued from the water at Playa del Muelle, in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, on Monday morning.
At around 10:00am, the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received a 112 alert requesting urgent medical assistance. Fellow bathers had pulled the man from the sea after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, caused by ingesting a large amount of water.
When emergency crews arrived, first responders were already performing resuscitation, which was continued by SUC paramedics. They succeeded in reversing the cardiac arrest before transferring the patient by ambulance to the Hospiten Bellevue hospital.
Authorities continue to remind residents and visitors to take extra care when swimming in the Canary Islands, as strong currents and sudden changes in sea conditions can pose serious risks.
Beach Safety Tips for the Canary Islands:
- Check the flags – A red flag means no swimming, yellow means caution, green means safe. Always respect local warnings and signs.
- Be aware of currents – Even calm-looking waters can have strong rip currents. If caught, swim parallel to the shore until you’re free.
- Never swim alone – Always go with a friend or make sure someone on shore is watching you.
- Stay within your depth – Especially important if you’re not a strong swimmer.
- Mind the waves – Sudden large waves are common on some beaches, particularly in the north of Tenerife.
- Watch children closely – Keep them within arm’s reach at all times.
- Know your limits – If you feel tired or unwell, get out of the water immediately.
For more information, check the local council’s beach safety notices or ask lifeguards on duty.
