A 56-year-old man was found dead inside his car yesterday morning (Sunday) after it plunged approximately 30 metres into the Guayadeque ravine in the El Oronado area of Ingenio, in Gran Canaria.
According to reports, the victim was a resident of the same neighbourhood where the accident occurred.
The incident came to light at 8:35am when the Ingenio Local Police alerted the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) after spotting the vehicle at the bottom of the ravine.
Emergency services, including a medicalised ambulance and a basic life support unit from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), as well as firefighters, and the Guardia Civil, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, paramedics confirmed the death of the driver of the car, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, and firefighters then undertook the challenging task of extracting the body from the wreckage, with the difficult terrain adding complexity to the operation.
The Guardia Civil has taken over the judicial investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Currently, the cause of the crash remains unknown, but they are exploring potential scenarios, including a mechanical failure, driver distraction, or other factors that could have led to the car leaving the road.
The precise time of the accident is also unclear, with suspicions that it might have occurred during the early hours of the morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
