Man dies after accidentally falling off a cliff and being dragged out to sea by a wave

A 57-year-old man died yesterday (Tuesday) after accidentally falling off a cliff in Gran Canaria. The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) of the Canary Islands were notified at 3:59pm that a man had fallen off the cliff whilst fishing, landing in an area of stones and rocks before being dragged into the sea by a large wave.

They immediately activated the necessary emergency resources and sent a GES helicopter to the area at Costa Botija in Gáldar, which airlifted the man from the sea to the helipad at the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas.

At the time of the rescue, the man was in cardiorespiratory arrest, so the GES crew carried out CPR resuscitation manoeuvres during his evacuation to the hospital.

However, despite their efforts they couldn’t revive him and on arrival at the hospital helipad, paramedics confirmed his death. An investigation is open into the cause of his death and how the tragic accident happened.
