Man arrested at airport with more than 1,000 grams of cocaine in a backpack

The Guardia have arrested a 33-year-old man at Gran Canaria Airport after finding 1,028 grams of cocaine worth over 80,000 euros hidden in a backpack that he had taken on a plane as hand luggage.

The man had arrived on a flight from Madrid believing that his hand luggage wouldn’t be checked as it is an internal domestic flight, but it was, and the police found the drugs wrapped in a brown package after being tipped off by suspicious customs officers in Madrid.

This arrest was the result of actions carried out by the Guardia Civil and Customs Surveillance agents of the Tax Agency aimed at the prevention of drug trafficking through airports.

The detainee, together with the seized drugs, was placed at the disposal of the Telde Investigating Court in Gran Canaria, which ordered him straight into prison.
