The association formed by 21 legal excursion sales companies in Adeje and Arona, who employ over one hundred people in 42 locations in the south of Tenerife, filed a request last week to be heard at the next plenary session of the local government about their situation with illegal outlets that are seriously harming their businesses.
The Association of Tourist Intermediation Companies of Tenerife (ADETURI), have announced that they have been accepted at today’s session at Arona Town Hall which starts at 5:00pm, so that their claims can be heard and debated by local politicians and they can get their point across.
ADETURI says that they have located eight desks and booths that have suddenly appeared in the last few months, that are selling excursions to tourists on the streets of the busiest holiday hotspots, but without having the mandatory tourist intermediation license, without paying rent, without paying tax, without paying Social Security for their workers (at least for this activity), and occupying space public walkways and streets.
In May of this year before the elections, the Mena government of Arona acted and succeeded in expelling twelve of these companies from the main streets and seafront promenades of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos.
However, since then, they have re-emerged and are operating again ‘as usual’. ADETURI claims that the penalties are not heavy enough for this malpractice as fines of up to 3,000 euros are not deterring them or affecting them as they can recover that money in just a few days as they are not operating with the same costs or legislation that they have to comply with.
