Access roads to Mount Teide have reopened after temporary closures caused by ice on the roads. The Cabildo have confirmed that the TF-24 and TF-21 roads are now open again after inspections carried out on Thursday verified that driving conditions are safe again.

Both routes provide key access to Teide National Park and were closed on Wednesday as a precaution due to patches of ice on several sections of the roads following snowfall caused by Storm Regina.

Preventive closure due to ice

The restrictions were introduced after icy conditions were detected in the high-altitude areas surrounding Mount Teide. Authorities closed the roads temporarily to reduce the risk of accidents and to protect both drivers and emergency services operating in the area.

Such closures are relatively common during colder weather or periods of precipitation around Teide, where conditions can change quickly and lead to ice forming on the road surface.

Drivers urged to take care

Island authorities are reminding residents and visitors to check road conditions before travelling to high mountain areas.

Drivers are also advised to review weather forecasts and exercise extra caution when travelling through the summit areas, where ice or snow can appear quickly on certain stretches of road at this time of year.

Teide National Park, one of the most visited natural attractions in the Canary Islands, sits at a high altitude. During the winter months it is common for changing weather conditions to affect driving routes in the area.

For this reason, local authorities frequently introduce precautionary road closures when risks are detected, prioritising the safety of residents, tourists and emergency teams operating in the park.
