Large Brown Patch of Algae Approaches South Coast of Tenerife

A large brown patch, believed to be an accumulation of algae, has been observed approaching the southern coast of Tenerife, particularly near Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora and the popular resort area of Los Gigantes in Santiago del Teide.

The phenomenon was captured in striking images by photographer Eduardo García, who reported the appearance of “large patches of algae drifting towards the coast.”

According to García, the presence of the algae was confirmed not only by its visible spread across the water but also by seagulls feeding on it.

The origin and potential impact of the algal mass have not yet been officially confirmed. However, similar occurrences in the past have been linked to changing sea temperatures and ocean currents, which can increase the presence of such organic material near coastal areas.

Local authorities and environmental services may monitor the situation in the coming hours, particularly as these accumulations can affect water quality and beachgoers experiences during peak seasons. At present, no official warnings or advisories have been issued.
