After weeks of meticulous work, the alfombristas of the ArteArena completed the magnificent Magno Tapiz in La Orotava’s Town Hall square yesterday at midday.
Created with natural sands from the Teide National Park, the grand carpet is now ready to be admired by residents and visitors alike on the Feast of Corpus Christi, the highlight of La Orotava’s Patronal Festivities.
This year’s masterpiece, titled “At the Gates of Paradise”, features a prominent depiction of Pope Francis, added as a last-minute tribute following his recent passing on 21st April. The detailed composition also includes the faces of Jesus and Mary, twelve large animals, flowers, Adam and Eve, and the serpent with the forbidden fruit, all representing the biblical moment of creation.
Over the past few days, hundreds gathered to watch the final touches being added, but today, thousands will flock to view what many regard as the most spectacular expression of ephemeral art in the Canary Islands, some from the square itself, others from the Town Hall balcony.
A Tradition Over 150 Years Old
Joining the central tapestry are the flower and heather carpets crafted by local associations, families, and community groups along the historic streets of La Orotava’s old town. As is tradition, the day began with the ringing of the bells from the Church of La Concepción at 7:00am, followed by a special Eucharistic celebration attended by the alfombristas.
Once the mass concludes, the streets come alive with volunteers, families, and artists crafting vibrant, detailed designs, a tradition passed down through generations for more than a century and a half.
Wine, Culture, and Community
In parallel with the artistic celebrations, the Liceo de Taoro Cultural Society is hosting the 41st Villa de La Orotava Wine Competition this morning. The event, supported by the local council and the island’s wine regulatory body, showcases both local growers and DO wines from across Tenerife.
Later in the day, many will pause for a midday break before activities resume at 6:30pm with a second Eucharist, this time presided over by Bishop Eloy Santiago of the Diocese of Nivariense and accompanied by local choirs. Following the service, the Corpus Christi procession will begin, parading over the carpets and concluding in the Town Hall square before returning to the church.
A Week of Celebrations
The festive week continues tomorrow with the iconic Baile de Magos (Traditional Costume Dance) in the Plaza del V Centenario, where typical Canarian dress is mandatory and multiple music stages promise a lively atmosphere.
Saturday features a livestock fair, the procession of the Patron Saints, and a spectacular fireworks display, while Sunday marks the grand finale with the Romería, a traditional pilgrimage and celebration in honour of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza, bringing the 2025 Patronal Festivities to a colourful close.
Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, this week in La Orotava offers a perfect blend of art, faith, culture, and community spirit, not to be missed.
