A hotel cleaner has been arrested in the south of Gran Canaria on suspicion of stealing a gold necklace worth €450 from a tourist's room and selling it for a fraction of its value.
The National Police arrested the woman following an investigation into the disappearance of the jewellery from a hotel in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
The incident took place on 28th September, when a tourist returned to her room and discovered that a gold necklace she had left among her personal belongings was missing.
There were no signs of forced entry, so officers investigated who had access to the room while the guest was away.
Necklace sold for just over €100
Officers from the Maspalomas Police Station established that a member of the hotel's cleaning staff had entered the room to carry out her usual duties.
Investigators then traced the missing necklace to a local gold-buying business, where they discovered it had been sold on the same day it disappeared.
According to the National Police, the employee had received just over €100 for the necklace, despite it being valued at €450.
Officers recovered the jewellery and began arrangements for it to be returned to its rightful owner.
