Tenerife fans to say goodbye to Jesús de Miguel at stadium tribute today

CD Tenerife supporters will gather at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in Santa Cruz today, Saturday 7th November, to pay tribute to Jesús de Miguel following his death earlier this week.

The ceremony will begin at 6.00pm, with the stadium doors opening at 4.00pm. Entry is free and open to everyone until the venue reaches capacity, although the club has asked those attending to arrive early.

De Miguel, who was 30, died on Tuesday morning after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday afternoon’s match at the Heliodoro. The striker was taken to hospital following the incident but could not be saved.

His death has prompted an outpouring of grief, not only in Tenerife and across Spanish football, but across the world. Supporters have been leaving flowers, scarves, photographs and messages outside the stadium, particularly around gate 9, in recognition of the number he wore for the club.

Today’s tribute

The ceremony is expected to begin with a minute’s silence and the CD Tenerife anthem. Images celebrating De Miguel’s life and career will be shown, with representatives of the club also due to speak.

A religious service of remembrance, led by the Bishop of Tenerife, will follow.

All stadium gates will be open for access except gates 8 and 9, where the tributes left by supporters remain in place.

For those unable to attend, the ceremony will be shown live on CD Tenerife’s YouTube channel and on Televisión Canaria. The broadcaster’s coverage is due to begin at 5:55pm.

Tributes across Spanish football

De Miguel’s funeral took place on Thursday in Navahermosa, in the province of Toledo, where his family comes from. His teammates and club staff were among those who attended.

Matches across Spanish football this weekend will also pay tribute to the striker with a minute’s silence and a pause after the ninth minute, reflecting his shirt number. Tenerife’s scheduled match against Granada has been postponed.

A judicial investigation into the circumstances of his death is continuing. The court has received a preliminary post-mortem report, but its contents remain confidential out of respect for De Miguel and his family.
