A spectacular display of 500 drones will illuminate Corralejo bay as Fuerteventura’s International Kite Festival returns next week. The 39th edition runs from 9th–15th November, bringing more than 200 kite flyers from around the world to the beaches of Corralejo and El Cotillo.
The night-time displays are scheduled for Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November, when hundreds of illuminated drones will create shapes and figures above the bay.
La Oliva Council is promoting the attraction as the largest drone show held in the Canary Islands to date.
During the day, colourful kites will take centre stage as the festival brings its international gathering back to the island’s northern coastline. For residents and holidaymakers, it offers an opportunity to enjoy one of Fuerteventura’s most distinctive outdoor events.
The programme also includes an astroscience activity, a park of giant figures and the second edition of the Kite Festival outdoor painting competition.
La Oliva mayor Isaí Blanco has invited residents and visitors to enjoy the festival together, highlighting its family atmosphere and the international profile it has developed over successive editions.
Protecting the natural setting will also form part of the event’s organisation. The council says environmental guides, designated boundaries, shuttle services, eco toilets and environmental workshops will help manage the gathering and encourage visitors to care for the coastline.
Tourism and Environment councillor David Fajardo highlighted the contribution of the kite flyers who return each November, alongside the importance of looking after the landscapes that provide the festival’s backdrop.
The event is organised by La Oliva Council with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands Government.
Visitors planning to attend the drone displays should check the organisers’ latest programme for confirmed start times, viewing arrangements and transport information before travelling.
