Residents and holidaymakers in Tenerife are being urged to check their plans as Storm Bruna approaches the island, with closures and event suspensions coming into force from midnight tonight, Sunday 8th November.
The Cabildo is activating its emergency plan in response to forecasts of heavy rain, strong winds and storms. Local councils have also announced measures for their municipalities.
Trails, ravines and outdoor activities
From midnight, access to tracks, paths and trails in Tenerife’s protected natural areas will be prohibited. Outdoor activities in these areas will also be suspended.
The restrictions include:
- Masca and Barranco del Infierno: access will be closed.
- Camping and recreational areas: closed until further notice.
- Hiking, climbing and canyoning: suspended in protected natural areas.
- Outdoor sporting events and filming: existing authorisations in affected natural areas will be suspended.
The Cabildo says the measures are compulsory because of the risk of falling rocks, falling trees and sudden increases in water levels in ravines. They will remain in place until the authorities announce they can be lifted.
Arona: outdoor and municipal activities suspended
Arona Council has ordered the suspension of all activities taking place outdoors and in municipal facilities from midnight until the storm has passed in the municipality.
The decision affects areas including Los Cristianos, Playa de Las Américas and Las Galletas. Anyone planning to attend an event or activity should check with its organiser for details of cancellation or rearrangement.
La Laguna and cultural venues
La Laguna Council will close municipal parks, community centres, sports facilities and cultural venues, including libraries and theatres, from midnight. Council-organised events are also suspended.
Access to the Cruz del Carmen car park in Anaga, as well as natural swimming pools and coastal areas in the municipality, will be prohibited.
In Santa Cruz, the TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes museum will close on Sunday and has suspended its scheduled activities, including the evening screening of Blue Heron.
Water sports and coastal activities
The Canary Islands Government is advising people to postpone water sports and other nautical activities, as well as swimming at remote or unsupervised beaches, because of the approaching storm.
A coastal alert is due to begin at 6.00pm today, Saturday, for exposed northern and western coasts across the islands. The remaining coasts will be under a pre-alert.
The government’s advice is precautionary; it does not by itself confirm that every private boat trip or water-sports excursion has been cancelled. Anyone with a booking should contact the operator before travelling.
Authorities also advise keeping away from exposed coastlines, harbour walls and breakwaters, where waves can sweep people into the sea.
