Guardia Civil seizes 8,000 illegal vapes and e-cigarettes in the Canary Islands

The Guardia Civil has seized more than 8,000 vapes and electronic cigarettes in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that don’t meet health standards, warning that these illicit products pose a severe health risk to consumers.

The operation, carried out in February by the Fiscal and Borders Patrol of Santa María de Guía, targeted a wholesale business in the port area of Las Palmas.

The establishment was found to be selling vapes and e-cigarettes that do not meet the legal requirements for manufacturing, presentation, and commercialisation, thus endangering public health.

Authorities have been closely monitoring the tobacco and vaping market, identifying an alarming increase in the sale of unauthorised products, particularly in tourist areas in the south of the island and the capital.

These items were being distributed without the necessary approval from the Spanish Ministry of Health and the Directorate-General for Public Health, violating regulations on manufacturing, labelling, and distribution. Such irregularities bypass safety measures intended to protect consumers.

During the operation, officers confiscated thousands of products that breached various legal standards. Infractions included packaging that failed to provide information in Spanish, non-compliance with established health regulations, the use of illicit re-labelling, and excessive nicotine levels exceeding the legally permitted limit.

The Guardia Civil has emphasised that these illegally imported products are entering Spain through unauthorised channels. As a result, the case has been reported to the Directorate-General for Public Health of the Canary Islands Government.

Consumer Advice

Consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing vapes and electronic cigarettes. Legal products must display information in Spanish, contain no more than 2% nicotine, be limited to approximately 700 puffs, and include an information leaflet inside the packaging.

Additionally, a legally compliant warning label must state: “This product contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance. It is not recommended for non-smokers.”

If a product does not meet these criteria, it should not be used due to potential health risks. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal sales to the relevant authorities.
