The Gran Canaria Cabildo has activated the Insular Territorial Emergency Plan of Civil Protection (PEIN) as a precautionary measure, starting from midday tomorrow, Sunday 2nd March, following the regional government's declaration of a pre-alert for adverse weather conditions, including rain, hail, and snow at altitudes above 1,800 metres.
The activation of the emergency plan comes in response to a developing isolated high-altitude depression (DANA) that is expected to bring worsening weather conditions from Sunday. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued several yellow warnings affecting five of the Canary Islands.
According to the Directorate General of Emergencies, rainfall is expected to be light to moderate, with most precipitation occurring as showers. There is also a likelihood of locally heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and small hail.
Forecasts indicate potential storms on the islands with higher elevations, with rainfalls possibly reaching up to 15 litres per square metre within an hour, and higher intensities in isolated areas.
The instability is expected to persist until Monday, with the possibility of extending into Wednesday. This could affect numerous Carnival events and other festive activities scheduled across Gran Canaria.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant, follow official advice, and take necessary precautions during the adverse weather conditions.
