The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of alert due to the risk of forest fires in the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera (above 400 metres altitude), La Palma, Tenerife (in the risk zone established by the Insular Council including the area affected by the recent forest fire, which remains in a state of Emergency), and Gran Canaria (above 400 metres).
The alert has been activated based on available information and in accordance with the Special Civil Protection and Emergency Response Plan for Forest Fires (INFOCA).
The dry and warm weather, due to the influx of Saharan air, is causing an increase in maximum temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, and relative humidity will drop below 30% during this episode inland and at summits.
The wind will be moderate from the northeast on coasts with occasional strong intervals in the northwest and southeast extremes of the islands, while in midlands and summits, a moderate east wind with occasional strong intervals will blow.
PREVENTIVE TIPS FOR THE POPULATION:
· The local authorities have prohibited outdoor fires during the next few days, and there is no authorization for burning debris or using barbecues.
· In case of strong winds and high temperatures, refrain from lighting fires outdoors, not even in barbecues, gardens, or private plots.
· Do not discard matches or cigarette butts. Do not throw paper, plastic, glass, or any type of flammable waste or material that could cause a fire.
· In forested areas, do not use brush cutters, chainsaws, welding equipment, or grinders.
· During fire risk periods, it is advisable to know the terrain well, communication routes, alternative paths, and always walk in highly visible areas. If you are going hiking, especially with older adults and children, try not to deviate from the marked trails.
· Never camp outside designated areas, especially in remote areas away from access roads. In the event of a fire, you could become surrounded by flames.
