Firefighters were called to the south of Tenerife on Sunday afternoon after a blaze broke out in an agricultural warehouse in Guaza, producing a towering column of smoke visible from several kilometres away.

Motorists travelling along the TF-1 motorway reported seeing the dark plume stretching high into the sky.

The incident was first reported by Televisión Canaria, which confirmed that emergency crews quickly arrived on the scene to contain the flames. Several fire engines from the Tenerife Fire Brigade were deployed, supported by the Local Police and the Guardia Civil to manage traffic and secure the area.

No Risk to Residents
Authorities have reassured the public that there are no residential properties close to the warehouse and no immediate danger to people. This meant no evacuations were necessary, although drivers on the TF-1 were urged to take extra caution due to reduced visibility in the area.

Unknown Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. Fire investigators are expected to examine the site once it is safe to do so. Agricultural warehouses in the region are often used for storing tools, machinery, fertilisers, and produce, all of which can contribute to the speed and intensity of a fire.

Guaza’s Strategic Location
Guaza, located between the tourist resort of Los Cristianos and the towns of Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio, is a hub for agricultural and industrial activity in the south of Tenerife. While the surrounding landscape includes farmland and banana plantations, it is also close to key transport links such as the TF-1, making any large-scale fire in the area highly visible.

Recent Incidents Highlight Summer Fire Risks
Although wildfires are more common in the mountainous and forested areas of the island, incidents in industrial or agricultural facilities can still pose serious hazards. The hot, dry conditions typical of August can make such structures more vulnerable, especially if flammable materials are stored inside.

Emergency services have reminded the public to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 1-1-2, and to avoid approaching incident scenes to allow crews to work safely and efficiently.
